Emergency management in rural communities and the farming sector.

CattleDisaster Mastermind specialises in emergencies in rural communities and the farming sector.  We recognise the complexity of the interplay between the natural environment, rural landscape, climate change and community characteristics and the impact this has upon capacity to plan for, respond to and recovery from emergency events.

Add to that limited access to services and resources, pockets of communication disruption, and large areas of isolation and limited transport networks, managing emergencies in rural, remote and farming areas can be challenging.

Effective emergency management in the outback requires direct community involvement in the development of local emergency practices and strategies.  Communities must be prepared to look after themselves during the time it takes for emergency response and recovery services to arrive.  Emergency planning in this context can be daunting and confusing.  Just knowing what you need, what you can do within your own community, and where you can source additional support from can be difficult.

Disaster Mastermind can work with your community to overcome these barriers.  We provide tailored services for communities and community groups to ensure emergency plans and practices are suited to your needs, culture and community identity.  Some of the ways we can help is:

  • Supporting local government and regional and state entities develop community engagement strategies with primary industry, business and peak representative bodies
  • Identifying the risks and hazards for your community
  • Identifying areas of strength within your community that can be harnessed to build your own capacity
  • Identifying gaps or areas where additional assistance is required and developing strategies for these
  • Providing linkages with external agencies and developing partnerships
  • Ensuring your voice is heard following emergency events and ensuring channels for participation are open
  • Advocating for inclusive practices and ensuring emergency programs driven by external agencies are consistent with meeting your community needs
  • Developing emergency leadership within the community through training, skills and knowledge development
